          PRAISE is showered on politicians when they are dead. In the case of Nkosiphendule Kolisile, the Gauteng MEC for economic development who was killed in a car accident at the age of 40, most of it is thoroughly deserved.

          Unlike many MECs who are parachuted into their positions with little or no experience of local politics or the rough and tumble of legislative debate and committee work, Kolisile became MEC in July 2012 the hard way - by distinguishing himself in the legislature, which he had joined in 2009.

          As chairman of the economic affairs committee, he impressed both his own side and the opposition as dynamic, passionate and professional.

          Despite being a lifelong communist, he was guided by pragmatism rather than ideology in his legislative work.
